ROOTED Movement
Movement and creative expression are vital keys to emotional, mental, and physical well-being across all ages. Yoga, an ancient technology stemming from India’s rich culture and traditions, is a system that helps bring a sense of wholeness to individuals and the communities they are part of. Through observation of nature, both inside and outside, and cultivation of awareness, union and unity can be found. Through ROOT (Real Opportunities Offering Togetherness / Radical Opportunities to Overcome Troubles Together) programming, Ashni guides participants through a series of asanas (Yoga poses) to connect with their bodies, hearts, minds, and the natural world. Utilizing the seasons as inspiration for classes, we will cultivate a greater connection to our body, breath, and heart inspired by the Earth and all elements. Each class will include breath, movement, and meditation.
About Sunder Ashni: Ashni, daughter of Cynthia and Allan, is a farmer at Mumbet’s Freedom Farm, facilitator, educator, and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, with rich roots in the island of St. Vincent & The Grenadines. Relating to the earth and our earthly body as the container for our experience and the literal ground that holds the myriad world of feeling, story, sensation, and meaning-making, Ashni invites those she is in connection with into a process in which we get to the root of what is calling for healing. Beyond ideas, past the limits of our conditioning, we invite an exploration of the infinite possibilities for healing with and through our bodies. While Ashni does not diagnose or provide clinical support, she has over 20 years of experience working with individuals and groups to manage stress, anxiety, and the effects of trauma, utilizing skills cultivated with dedication to our mutual liberation.

Birdwatching Basics
Slideshow on the basics of birdwatching, followed by a leisurely bird walk around the farm.
There is spectacular biodiversity all around us--though often it is hidden in plain sight. Perhaps no taxonomic group has captivated the human imagination quite like birds. In Ancient Greece, oracles looked to birds in the skies to foretell the future. Throughout recorded history, birds have played a symbolic role in art and literature. They fascinate us with their flight, dazzle us with their beauty and serenade us with song. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of how to find and identify many of the amazing birds that inhabit the forests, fields and ponds of the Berkshires. There are few other outdoor pursuits that offer physical, intellectual and spiritual benefits that come quite naturally with learning to notice, identify and watch birds. Our aim is for each participant to gain a deeper connection to and appreciation of the natural world through the gateway of birdwatching.
Space is limited.
Please bring your own binoculars if you have them. There will be some provided, but there may not be enough for everyone.
Access note: The farm has inclines and uneven terrain. A porta potty is available that is handicap accessible.
About the facilitator: Ben Nickley, executive director of Berkshire Bird Observatory is a scientist with a passion for birds and the ecosystems they are integral to. Always fascinated by nature, he got his start in science at Ohio State University. Since then, Ben has travelled across North America pursuing avian field studies for nonprofits, universities, and state governments—picking up his master’s in biology along the way. He is the author of several peer-reviewed articles and has presented his work at international conferences. Helping others connect with the natural world through birds is his forte and his mission. He currently directs Berkshire Bird Observatory, a small non-profit dedicated to the conservation of birds through science, partnerships, and education.

Soil Microscopy Training
Participants will view various soils and composts, looking at the different soil structures and the microbes that thrive in healthy soil. Demonstrations include how to prepare a slide for viewing, what you might find and how to evaluate your findings. Participants will be trained to analyze the following:
Bacteria : Fungi ratios – what they mean and why they’re important
Aggregate structure in soil/compost

Quality of fungi and what that means for your soil
Predators – identify and quantify both aerobic and anaerobic microbes
Compost tea and extracts – microbial populations that exist in real time
Throughout the training we will discuss ways to create healthy, living soil using regenerative agriculture techniques. At the completion of the training you will be ready to use your microscope to evaluate soil and compost, with the ability to store the information in written and visual form, to share, and compare with future samples.

Setting your team up for a successful season
Providing new farm employees with comprehensive orientation to your farm’s systems, policies, and work culture is a crucial step to set yourself up for a successful season. Jen Salinetti (co-director) and Aviva Klein (farm manager) of Woven Roots Farm have learned through experience the importance of making time for this early-season step. In this workshop, Jen and Aviva will share the systems they’ve developed for onboarding both new and returning employees at the start of each season, and they will support attendees in developing or refining their own orientation plans.
This in-person CISA workshop is free, but please register here by Monday, January 26th so we can provide food for all. Snacks will be available throughout, and a late lunch will be provided by 1:30.
